Cooling methods and advantages of electric vehicle drive motors

2024-05-22

1. Water-cooled drive motor

The water-cooled drive motor uses water circulation to dissipate heat. The main principle is to pump water to the inside of the drive motor for cooling, and then discharge the hot water out of the car. This cooling method has the advantages of good circulation cooling effect, high heat dissipation efficiency and stable and reliable cooling system.

Advantage:

1. High heat dissipation efficiency: The water-cooled heat exchanger can transfer energy quickly and efficiently, which is much better than the heat dissipation effect of air-cooling and oil-cooling.

2. The cooling system is stable and reliable: Due to the good stability of the water cooling system, it can ensure that long-term operation will not cause problems such as failure.

2. Air-cooled drive motor

The air-cooled drive motor uses a fan to send air into the interior of the motor to dissipate heat, and then discharges it outside the vehicle. This cooling method has small wind resistance, which can reduce part of the weight of the external accessories of the motor and reduce the overall weight of the vehicle, but the heat dissipation efficiency is not as good as water-cooling and oil-cooling.

Advantage:

1. Small heat dissipation area: The heat dissipation area of the motor is smaller than that of the water-cooled and oil-cooled types, so it is suitable for installation under the need to reduce vehicle weight.

2. Simple: The air-cooled drive motor has a simple structure, which reduces production costs.

3. Oil-cooled drive motor

The oil-cooled drive motor uses a fan to transfer heat through the radiator, so that the oil circulation around the motor is cooled. This method can play the two roles of lubricating oil and cooling oil, but its liquid heat transfer effect is not as good as the water-cooled type.

Advantage:

1. Good stability: Oil-cooled vehicles have less impact on the outdoor environment and will not cause problems such as easy condensation.

2. Prevent overheating: Oil cooling can prevent failure problems caused by overheating of the electric vehicle drive motor.

In practical applications, various cooling methods have their applicable scenarios. For example, high-temperature areas in summer may require a more efficient cooling system; in the north, oil-cooled drive motors may be more practical due to low temperature and icing issues in winter. At the same time, the advantages and disadvantages of various cooling methods should be combined with specific scenarios to choose the most appropriate method.
